The word vintage is most associated to that of wine, and refers to a particular harvest or crop that a wine was made from. The same feel of the word relates to that of clothes when people say the term vintage clothing. It represents clothes that are from a particular time in history and so rather than the ordinary clothes you see in the high street which are current and modern, vintage clothes are styles from the past. Now when we say clothes from the past we don’t mean people are walking around in rags from the 1800s, generally speaking vintage clothing date back any time between the 1940s to the 1980s.
The great thing about today’s fashion is that anything goes in that you can accessorize and mix and match to your hearts content and the more whacky your outfit the more fashionable you will look. Therefore people are looking in other shops for more whacky clothes to be different than to that on the high street. Vintage clothing is a great way to set yourself aside from the norm and make a statement but still look fabulous. Shopping vintage is pretty much the same as shopping in say Top Shop or River Island, they split up the selection in ladies and mens and then further into tops, dresses, jeans, shoes etc. When shopping around vintage shops or online at vintage websites you will see that a lot of the current fashion is a remake of the original older styles, they have simply tweaked it a little to make it a bit different. For example leggings are fashionable today but they are exactly the same designs and styles that were worn 20/30 years ago.
A great tip if you are starting out shopping for vintage clothing is to pick a year or decade and mimic that look from the clothes you find in vintage shops or online. This gives you a great starting point in knowing what looks good with what. It may take a little bit of time to get used to shopping around for vintage clothes but wearing vintage clothes will make you stand out from the crowd and make you look like a fashion guru.
